Heat Recovery Ventilators (HRVs)

Heat recovery ventilators are often overlooked as efficient fresh air sources and can incorporate many filtration / purification systems. It is a ducted system that uses a medium to exchange the heat of the outgoing air with that of the incoming fresh air at an efficiency rate of around 70%.

If you are in a cold climate and are using a window or a door to bring in fresh air you may wish to consider a ducted system such as this to supply the required 15 cfm (cubic feet per minute) per person. Depending on the model of ventilator you can also retain humidity or exhaust it to the outside.

When using a radiant panel heat system or other closed loop system an HRV is the best option if a separate forced hot air furnace is cost prohibitive. Often in a heated exercise room clients complain of not enough oxygen or stuffiness--these are best answered with the installation of an HRV or ERV.

Ionizers

Ionizers can provide very effective protection against bacteria and the odors they cause. The output of an ionizer machine is the key to its effectiveness in a commercial space. Small units simply do not have the power to sanitize large areas quickly. Industrial strengh ionizers are available for installation into forced air systems or as stand alone units and can range in output capacity to treat from a small space to an entire building. These devices are best used at night in unoccupied spaces and should not be used when people are present, as long term exposure is not considered healthy. The room once treated should be aired out before occupancy.
